HARGEISA– The newly elected President of Somaliland has embarked on his first official foreign visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), marking a significant shift in diplomatic tradition. Unlike previous presidents who prioritized visits to neighboring Ethiopia and Djibouti, the President’s decision to begin his international engagements in the UAE underscores the strategic importance of Somaliland’s relationship with the Gulf nation.

As citizens celebrated the momentous occasion, focusing on the red carpet used before the President’s departure, the core diplomatic agenda remains of utmost importance. This visit presents a crucial opportunity to address key bilateral issues that could significantly impact the future of Somaliland-UAE relations. Among the primary topics that should be discussed with UAE officials are the following:

1. Facilitation of Travel and Visa Issuance: One of the pressing concerns for Somaliland citizens and businesspeople is the recognition and acceptance of the Somaliland passport by the UAE government. Securing visa issuance for Somalilanders would not only facilitate travel but also strengthen trade, investment, and employment opportunities between the two nations.

2. Attracting Emirati Investors: The UAE is a major economic hub and encouraging Emirati businesses to invest in Somaliland would be mutually beneficial. Investment in key sectors such as infrastructure, energy, ports, and agriculture could accelerate economic growth and create employment opportunities in Somaliland.

3. Expansion of the Liaison Office into a Full Embassy: Upgrading the current Somaliland liaison office in the UAE to a fully functional embassy would be a significant diplomatic achievement. This move would enhance official diplomatic recognition and strengthen formal ties between the two governments.

4. Strengthening Trade Relations: Somaliland’s main trade partner is based in Dubai and enhancing trade agreements would benefit both nations. Ensuring smoother business operations, reducing trade barriers, and establishing direct banking and financial transactions should be part of the discussions.

5. Strategic Infrastructure and Port Development: The UAE, through DP World, has already invested in the Berbera Port. Expanding and further developing this partnership would enhance Somaliland’s position as a key trade corridor for the region, benefiting both parties economically and strategically.

6. Security and Regional Stability Cooperation: Given Somaliland’s geostrategic location along the Gulf of Aden, security cooperation between the two nations is essential. Discussions should explore opportunities for counter-terrorism collaboration, maritime security, and intelligence-sharing.

7. Humanitarian and Development Aid: The UAE has been involved in various humanitarian projects globally. Engaging with UAE officials on developmental aid, healthcare, education, and infrastructure support would be beneficial for Somaliland’s social and economic development.

This historic visit represents a crucial opportunity for Somaliland to solidify its relations with the UAE, ensuring that key issues are addressed, and meaningful agreements are reached. By focusing on these priorities, the President can lay the groundwork for a stronger and more prosperous relationship between the two nations, reinforcing Somaliland’s position on the global stage.
